First off, since this involves character/item balancing I figured this was the best forum. If it belongs somewhere else, I apologize

So, I have two items, I dunno their names but there effects are this-

Two Handed Gun- Launches a missle/rocket thing and does fire damage in a small circular field of fire. Does 87 Damage.

Two Handed Gun- Basically a lightning bolt taser, does 90 damage.

The latter weapon kills creatures MUCH faster than the former, even though the former is a bit stronger. I know it's a small difference, and at a glance I'd assume they'd basically kill two of the same creatures within the same time frame, but like I said, one is significantly stronger than the other (Taser > Rocket)

Do modifications to a weapon, the special abilities part that is, if you Stun or do something like that, does that increase damage or something? I'll let you know the complete statistics here in a second, look for an edit.

EDIT:
Fire-
Shield Overload- 59%
Increased Critical Chance- 2%
Critical Bonus-61%
Skillful- Tactical Stance 1
Critical Damage Bonus- 33%
Shield overload- 51%
Spectral Damage bonus- 17% extra damage against spectral creatures.
Electrified Rockets-17%
Fire Damage- 17-24/4m
Fire Damage field- 5-6/sex/4m for 3 seconds

Lightning-
Shield Overload +34%
18 To Stun Strength.
4% Chance to cause a spectral Nova.
Damage- 24-91 Electricity.

The guns themselves say just from highlighting the weapon, damage is 90 for taser and 87 for rocket, so, I dunno why the rocket is doing so much less damage than the taser, unless the highlighted glance for the rocket is bugged or something.

The big number on weapons isn't damage, it's a rating of the weapon, in fact you wrote the real damage in the weapon description : about 25-30 for the fire weapon, 24-91 for the taser
Here's the damage difference

Also, did you look at shots per minute?

Awesome post clearing showing the difference between weapon ratings and weapon damage.

Also, unless I am mistaken, isn't the damage lister per shot. So if all missiles hit the target point blank the missile launcher is quite powerful?

I know for certain that some types have the direct (on impact) sort of damage and splash.

correct

the "problem" is that highly-magic'd weapons usually have a higher or equal rating to much more damaging weapons, giving the illusion they are usable.

Also some AoE weapons like the exo-thermic rifle are amazing IF you hit but are quite erratic sometimes and occasionally wildly overshoot their intended target and end up dealing a small amount of damage.

What the hell is the rating for ? Does it increase the chance of hitting the target (like the attack rating in D2)?

Hellgate tries to approximate weapon effectiveness with rating. It is understandable that with the guns found in HGL, damage alone can't give you the whole answer. Even dps alone isn't enough. Splash, splash radius, firing spread, accuracy, etc. all play a role. How much damage would you give up for bigger splash raidus, say? Difficult to say.

I love my zeus rifle because it self target and doesn't have accuracy reduced by movement, compared with a assualt rifle. These kind of things are not reflected by damage or dps.
