The Summoner is AWESOME and the Engineer SUCKS.
Actually, it doesn't work like that...

Summoner! Because I prefer summer over engineer :P
But seriously, if FSS created two classes that can be compared so easily and so generally/generically, I most likely won't be playing this game.

well i think they're both balance...since the summoner lack in base damage and most of the damage come from the pets...
but the engineer drones are just to hold..and most of the damage come from the engineer....i have one of those multiple rocket launcher thing..
well i think the engineer is a late game guy since u get to upgrade ur drone

My Carnagor pretty much owns anything that gets close :P All I do is dualwield two rebounder guns and help :P Oh yeah..and stay out of the line of fire.

Well I've played both, Summoner is alright I guess, but I found them lacking. Engineer is just more fun to play IMO.

I have a summoner on multiplayer and an engineer on single - both around lvl 23 now.
My summoner is a carnagore-meatshield / elemental build. Meatshield is one awesome skill but my elementals are getting crushed very quickly. Without eles, my summoner becomes the main dmg dealer which is NOT good. For the first 15-18 levels, this summoner owned all . . . now I die a lot.
My engineer is a rocket bot / rifle drone build. I carry a multi-rocket launcher and a sniper rifle while my drone uses a fire multi-rocket launcher. In the open, I can snipe-kill half the mobs before they even reach my drone. As he levels up, he just gets better.
So far I believe the engineer is working out much better as he is scaling up with the mobs and the summoner doesn't seem to do so. Not being able to make elementals tougher or shorten the cooldown on meat shield are big negatives - but maybe I should have chosen the witch doctor.
I enjoy both but my summoner leaves lots of gravestones littering most levels now and my engineer survives almost every fight.
Take it for whatever it's worth to you but I would NOT have made a summoner knowing what I know now.

I've got a summoner and engineer right now, both hovering around level 10 so I don't claim to have any great idea about how it's all going to pan out. But my experience so far is that the engineer is less reliant on the dumb pet ai and thus a little more fun to play and enjoyable overall for me.
Having a drone and bots is a lot like having a carnagor and elementals but bots don't die left and right like elementals so theres less re-summoning required and instead of total reliance on minions you can opt for doing a bit of damage yourself as an engineer ala phase grenades, shock and awe, napalm, tactical stance, etc.

I've got a level 33 Summoner on multiplayer now. Basically, the main attacker is the Warper, it has a really nice dmg. I use Force Elemental to act like shield and disturb the movement of enemy. Fire Elemental acts like between Warper and Force Elemental to disturb and attack. However, although I have added skill to Summoning Circle, my Warper has about 7XX HP, it dies quickly during PVP and takes a long time to re-summon it. If the enemy is targeted to kill Warper in the beginning, I have less than 30% chance to win an Engineer or Marksman. Also, the weapon of summoner is quite useless in PVP, the short range and velocity is ...too slow...too easy to dodge by players.

I like the engineer for the simple fact that it doesn't make me lag like a bastard. I've gotten my Summoner to lvl 12 now and I can't play with her anymore, there's just effects left right and center and I have to PRAY that where I'm aiming is a creep...

Couldn't vote because I enjoy playing both. Finished the game with my engineer first and like the way you can effectively customize your drone with different gear, plus you also get to use the full range of hunter weaponry.
With the summoner you can't customize your minions, but you do get the choice different types of minion for different builds - basically a bigger selection of 'pets'. Some of the available summoner weaponry also seems to be pretty good to me (but then I was lucky enough to pick up 2 unique plus 2 legendary cabalist weapons by level 20!).

Summoner demon minions owns the Engineer drone in A.I and general behavior. The customization of the drone just doesn't make up for it's downsides, in my opinion.
For PvE at least - I am sure the 'crashes' of the Engineer makes it much better in PvP.

Worng - you don't have to, they kick ass all on their own.
Cool customization doesn't beat, as you put it, 'ghey' behavior and attack patterns.

I'd rather have a dumb bot with overwhelming firepower and armour than some ghey underarmed minions who happen to be good dancers. Maybe you and your minions could start your own boy band or something..... you could call yourselves "Da Batty Boyz"

Overwhelming firepower? The Drone?! You've probably never seen the Warper in action.

I'm kind of stuck on this question myself, I've plowed through normal MP on my guardian in record time to unlock elite, but I just don't know if I can bring myself to create another one just yet. Engineers, Summoners, and Evokers are the only classes I haven't touched. The evoker looks neat and all, but I think a pet class would be better suited for my first foray into serious Elite MP. I'd play them both some in normal, but honestly once I finish act 5 today on my Guardian I'm never playing normal again.
On paper the engineer seems like it might be slightly more interactive, so I'm kind of edging towards them at the moment.

The Engineer is customizable in that it can change what it's main pets uses, Summoners by customizing what pets they want to use.
It's all good really.

I have a Summoner around 20 in Elite and another around 10 in HCE, got one Engineer 11 atm in HCE and for now I think that Engineer is better for soloing. Got no idea in PvP which of both will be better, but I like the fact I can equip my drone with weapon/armor and that part is missing with Summoners. I'm not saying that Summoner is not good and strong, he's pretty nice class but still I prefer my Engie :)

I voted Engineer! My Engi is at level 34, now in nightmare mode and simply a pleasure to play. I went the less popular Rocket Bot, Bomber Bot route and for PvE this is a very comfortable, high survivability combo. Put plenty of points into Drone, get him some good armor, he doesn't need much healing; and with an exothermic rifle his damage output is excellent!
Not knocking the Summoner, here. Those I've partied with have been very good.

I think, maybe I could be wrong, that the main problem of Summoner is to clear fast the open areas like Millenium Battle at the entering zones like that. I mean with an Engineer I think it will be faster and easier to clean first 10-15m ahead of you when you're entering such zone than to do the same with a Summoner. And if this is right and I'm not wrong this will means that Engie will have better chance to survive in such zones than a Summoner.
Which at least for me and for other HC players is the main point in our game.

Engineer has greater survivability if his drone dies, since hunters generally have armor that actually, you know, *protects* them. However, an elemental summoner with enough force elementals and a warper has very high DPS on his side. I don't really know what I can say about PVP since I'm an SPer, so I'll skip that part. They're both great classes but I voted for summoner, out of principle.

Engineers Rule ... I played with both .. and i like my Engineer .. and conclusive crash rules man ... even thought i am playing elite with a MM, i am missing my drone which i have equiped with scale of Sydonai, and legendary sword and a legendary snipre rifle ! :), The bots are fun and i kill ppl in secs even in pvp with just spints and conclusive crashes with a sniper rifle, if it hits, it hits you hard :) ... I Love FPS and i may be biased ... but what the hell .. !!! Engineer all the way :)

In not melting computers and not being completely boring to play - Engineer.

Also nice to be able to sic your Carnagor on specific targets (Enrage) - actually allows you to feel you have some limited degree of control over your minion (shame there isn't a 'Heel!' command though).

My Engineer is only level 11 atm but I've enjoyed it so far and the fact that I can give guns to it etc makes it very intresting in my opinion.
I've also discovered that the inhibitator bots are great in pvp especially against blademasters. ^_^
Looking forward to try out haste bots, since I'm nearly always in a party of 2-4 players.

Switched to haste bots, I recant; haste bots is better for the Engineer.
Level 50 Normal Nightmare, Drone mounts Nikolai Polyphase 8 slot, really good damage. My primary weapon is a Rupert's Rifle modded to be accurate at 35 meters. Plus Molotov for AoE. Very easy to play. In role play imagination, my Engineer smokes cigars imported from Mythos, and carries a well-armored liter flask of rum on his belt. He is fond of the Engineer Drinking Song.
THE ENGINEER DRINKING SONG
We are, we are, we are, we are, we are the Engineers.
We can, we can, we can, we can demolish forty beers.
Drink rum, drink rum, drink rum all day, and come along with us,
for we don't give a damn for any old man who don't give a damn for us.
Godiva was a lady who through Coventry did ride,
a'showing all the villagers her lovely lily-white hide.
But the most observant villager, an Engineer of course,
was the only one who noticed that Godiva rode a horse.
CHORUS
I've come a long, long way she said and I would go as far
for the man who'd take me off my horse and lead me to the bar.
And the man who took her off her steed and led her to her beer
was a blurry eyed surveyor and a drunken Engineer.
CHORUS
The Engineers of Peter The Great, who was a Russian Czar,
While remodeling the palace, put a throne room in the bar.
He lined the walls with vodka, rum, and 40 kinds of beer, and
Advanced the Russian culture by one hundred forty years.
CHORUS
We did a piss-poor job on the timber trestle bridge.
We lost the fourth platoon out a'fighting on the ridge.
We zeroed in our rifles with precision and with care,
but when we fired for record Maggie's drawers were in the air.
CHORUS
An Engineer and his lady were spooning in the park.
The Engineer and his lady were spooning in the dark.
His scientific manner was a wonder to behold
for his left hand took the readings while his right hand turned the knobs.
CHORUS
Venus was a lady made entirely of stone,
There's not a fig leaf on her. She's as naked as a bone.
On seeing her misfortune an Engineer discoursed,
She's a broken hunk of concrete and she should be reinforced.
CHORUS
The Engineers and the Infantry were downing a gallon can.
The Infantry said to the Engineers, "Out-drink us if you can."
The Infantry took three drinks and died, their faces a ghastly green.
But the Engineers kept drinking, it was only gasoline.
CHORUS
My father was a miner on the Upper Malamute.
My mother was a hostess in a house of ill repute.
My brothers all were fairies and my sisters all were queers.
So I told them all to go to hell and I joined the Engineers.

The fact that after 81 votes, it's 40:41 shows that playstyle is what makes them different hehe :)
It's good to know that at least a couple of classes seem balanced in their own kind of way....

I am happy that I do not have to resummon my Drone every 5 seconds.
Getting the Warper to a level where it stays to the end of the board takes some planning.
Perhaps when I get tired of running through SH with my engineer I will spend more time with my Summoner.

Without hard feelings but if you or someone else need to resummon his drone in every 5 seconds he/she simply can't play as Engineer or he is let's say level 5 :)
When I'm playing mostly with my Engie I need to resummon my drone for like 1-2 times in a WEEK or less. There is no other minion that can be kept alive easily and can tank better than not 1 but few guardians that good as the drone.
About tanking, for example yesterday night I went with few guild mates to complete my 5th final test in Elite NM. We were 5 ppl party with me and my Engie with 4 Guardians. At the tunnel before Ploughyard we died few times and were outnumbered many times from the waves of 55-57 level mobs. At one moment I was with 2 Guardians and they both died in one of the attacking waves :)
So I was alone for few minutes while they came back and I handle without a problem with my drone those 5-7 levels above me and my drone mobs. That's why I think that everyone that need to resummon his drone probably need to change his playing style somehow?

One advantage of being a summoner is that you can pretty quickly put out a couple fodders (ie. force elementals) to slow down the opposition and the fact that all your elementals will distract the enemies.
Engie bots, don't do that. Though that can be an advantage in itself. I like the fact that you can heal 50% of his hp in a go. And you can customize it's equipment and attributes to suit your playstyle. Going up against a boss? Remove the sword and stick in a firestarter with ignite mods, up against many small critters? Stick a splash damage sword. Actually, you can stick a bladesaw into the gun slot and do pretty decent damage.
Carnie Meatshield can sometimes save your party from being overwhelmed, allowing your party to have a strategic retreat while he sacrifices himself.

Carnie Meatshield can sometimes save your party from being overwhelmed, allowing your party to have a strategic retreat while he sacrifices himself.
Actually, Drones have one glaring fault. With all its Damage reduction, it is still highly susceptible to ignite based attacks, which can take his hitpoints down drastically. And, as the engineers only tank, the damage adds up quick.
This is exactly where the Carnie shines in comparision. Meat shield actually allows the carnie to regenerate HP. And, at Max level of Blood Link, he can heal a hefty 70% HP every 2 seconds, which is actually much more effective then the repair drone at max level, although there is a trade off.
Finally, as a summoner, you are more biased towards emphasising on minion's bonuses, which includes minion's HP / Damage. Not so for an engineer, who will tend to focus on DR and personal Stat boosting.
Thus it is not uncommon to see an End Game Engineer to possess a 5~6K HP drone with High DR, while an End Game Carnie Summoner to have a 9~11K HP Carnie with modest DR.
If I had to pick which one to partner as a defensive meat shield, I would pick a Carnie summoner hands down.

I came to the game to play as a summoner and was crushed that the class was so poorly done. A single run through against occy made me want to give the game up entirely. Engineers have the most underrated skill in molotov, the ability to make balistic cannon's some of the best weapons in the game in haste bot, and the second best pet in the game behind the warper. Also, with the introduction of the new balistic cannon they are going to crush the summoner.
That said I hope so much that the summoner gets some love because I truly want them to succeed.
