View Full Version : Summoner: Spending skill points on Minions

"You have chosen... poorly."
The Summoner can only have one 'Minion' (non-Elemental) out at a time... so are you guys planning on investing in all of them, and pulling them out as the situation requires it, or only placing points into one of them (allowing more points to spend on elementals, etc)?
I would probably plump for the latter, because I'm crazy about efficiency... or is it appropriate and often desirable to switch minions in the middle of a battle? Any Beta testers have an opinion on this?
Thanks,
Sparkie.

Yes, it's rough because I do want to try all the demon summons, but the way it's set up putting points in all of them is detrimental.
Leveling is supposed to be pretty easy in this game though, so I guess making 1 char to test the skills I want, and another one based on efficiency isn't too bad. Still, I think giving us one respec near the end of the game wouldn't kill anyone. :p

Yes, Godzilla, that's exactly what I'm planning at the moment! - One test character that tries out every skill, followed by my 'proper' one... I really don't see why it has to be that way though, it's a major headache!
I think they should take more of a 'Titan Quest' approach to respeccing in HG:L
(See my moaning post in the General Discussion forum!)
The Summoner does seem to suffer the most with the no-recert rule IMO too. :(

If you want to try the demon summons just save your skill points and find armor with +skill on it.
Switching minions in the middle of a battle doesn't really work because there's a 20 second cooldown after you 'unsummon'? I'm not even sure if you can unsummon.

Yeah you can, hold alt and click on the summons portrait, then use the dismiss command.
Personally I haven't found a use for the dismiss yet other than 'refreshing' a half dead minion when you don't have the skill to heal it yet before another fight.
Personally I will be going the efficiency route, all points are going into my trusty little carnagor and his skills, then into elementals and a few into the minion heal skill.
Tank and dps for the win as a first char.
After which I'll probably build a witch doctor summoner for tag teaming with a mate :)

Thanks Kellion, that answers the 'switch during combat' question... I hear what you say about waiting for +skills equipment, that's certainly a possibility... I guess it'll just be easier to make a test character that has every skill first tho... oh well, good practice I suppose!
The only question now is... do I give my test character a decent name, or wait until I'm making a proper character? Hmm...

You can unsummon, hold alt and click the portrait like a party member, you'll find a unsummon option for minions.

I'm not sure which summon Is going to be my main one yet, but one thing I know is I'm DEFINITELY putting points into the Reaper. He's not around enough to be my main, so I'll need to build another one as well, but efficiency be damned. Too cool to pass up. ;)

I'm planning to do the EXACT same thing lol.
In your opinion what do you think are the important points to use in the elemental tree and carnagor tree? Or just work your way down and get them to full?

Well I think they are all important so have them balanced, remember the way skill work in this unlike d2 is that 1 point in a skill can be effective, so 1 point in enrage is fine for a while etc etc.
It was weird working that out at first.. I though all points to enrage as it'll be REALLY hard, and its true.. it is, but honestly its not needed at beginning game at all :) So I'd say level up balanced.
