View Full Version : Hunters and 3rd Person

I've read that hunters are meant to be played as FPS classes, where the player aims the gun as opposed to having more of an auto-aim system. I've also seen in videos where people shift to 3rd person as a hunter.
Is it possible to play hunters as a non-FPS style class in 3rd person? I have a friend who has a great disdain for FPS style play, but he has always liked "Ranger/Archer" style classes, so I thought I would ask if there is a non-FPS way to play the classes from this faction.
Thanks,
Dr-Doak

I've heard that hunters can play from either 1st or 3rd person

Well either way its very much a shooter class xD you are still aiming in third person view but you can play it entirely in third person yeah.. some weapons even cater to that.

There is no soft-aiming for the hunter classes though so it will require some FPS style skills

i think playing i third person would be like playing Tomb Raider or a similar game... you still have to be pretty accurate as you wont have the autoaim the other classes benefit from.

Tomb Raider does have auto-lock though :/

From the bit of gameplay videos I've seen it looks very, very playable in 3rd person. Depending how its done, this might be the prefered way to play for skilled players espcially.
Tomb Raider does have auto-lock though :/
You have a mouse in HG:L though :)

When you say you still have to aim in 3rd person, how is that done? Do you have to put a crosshair on the targets or is it more of a make sure you're character is facing in the general direction of the mobs? I think the main mechanic that is an issue here is when you're in 1st person, how you hit mobs is completely based off of your ability to target them with that crosshair. It seems like it would almost have to "soften" a bit in 3rd person, as I don't recall seeing a crosshair in that view, so there is not good way to determine how accurately your character is aiming.

maybe it's kind of like gears of war.
i really don't like the behind character view in that game.... first person shooters should be played in first person.
but anyway maybe it works like that, where you see from behind the character but there's still a little crosshair floating in front you to sort of aim with

I think playing in third person would be like playing May Payne.

As far as I know and remember, you point in their general direction, and based on where you are roughly pointing that enemy gets a green rectangle around it..
However the rectangle has 4 corners, which light up one by one the closer you are to an enemy, so the closer you are the more effective you are...
However with things like grenades in 3rd person, guessing it doesnt target, its just something you get used to the distance of...

What about this?

If I'm not mistaken, that's an engineer, who has a gun and has a crosshair.

Hmm, must be like that for hunters than, but I don't know if it was the same in the previous build, unless it was a templer I saw....
So guessing the current thing is a crosshair and a distance/power metre for dmg instead of a box...

3rd person would be alot harder to play anyway :P

Well it really depends... cos if it's like GTA was, with a crosshair, aiming is pretty much the same and you get to see what's behind and around you...
However it would be harder to say aim upwards and stuff like that... so I think both could be used based on the area and situation...

don't think this will become too much of an issue. The main positives i can see to the third person view is greater awareness of surroundings... especially in a game where there are huge mobs coming for you this becomes increasingly important for good mobo management. The only obvious problems here are those of latency, especially with the hunter classes

it's not. at the CDay i played with my engineer in 3rd person all the time. and if anything, it was easier to play it this way compared to 1st person. the drones were flying at the character's eye level, and would always get in the way.
so, take it or leave it... but aiming with hunter in 3rd person isn't all that difficult. now, i have very little FPS background, so perhaps i don't see all the advantages of having a fixed view at your target.

I think that the game will have be set up to be accomodating of third-person shooters, even though I imagine a fair number the players of the hunter class will be first-person shooter people, since that's one of the things distinguishing this game is being able to play it like a first-person shooter in an MMO setting. At least it won't be like Planetside. God, I hated that game so much.

First person, ftw imo. I read the description of the Hunter class and was like, sounds good. That's gonna be me. Then I found out later that Hunter's don't have auto aim and target locking and got even more excited, =). I think it'll be great in first person and NOT having the extra awareness. I'll be running around city streets and all of a sudden get attacked by some demon from behind - it's all about jumping a foot in the air in shock, getting that rush of adrenaline, spinning around and pumping tons and tons of ammo into the demon.
But I like FPSes in general, so I guess that kind of thing just suits me. Though it'll suck if drones get in the way of the camera while in first person.
