View Full Version : Monsters from Diablo 2 that you wouldn't like to see back!

I was thinking about the different action packed previews we've seen thus far and I've seen some similarities between Diablo 2 and Hellgate monsters. We've seen shaman like monsters with minions that can be revived and lightning emitting monsters for instance in the last 'Fire' and 'Ice' previews.

I've been thinking about what type of monster Hellgate could do without. I came up with the most obvious of them all: the Stygian Doll! Owh how I hate those little buggers! I think I find those more annoying than lightning emitting creatures! Anyone else have monster types they'd rather NOT see?

Lightning enchanted and kamikaze mobs.

If there is naked chicks in the UI, I might as well demand some in-game. Gimme stygian dolls :p but don't let them hurt me :p (senseless? Then mission accomplished)

What about the Minotaur Demons from LoD?! Fast and hard hitting bastards ;)

IIRC they were a bit bigger..don't remember so well, might be because I didn't have problems with them :b

But imps from LoD....brrr. It gives me creeps just to think that there are several different classes of imps at HG:L. Oh well, I hope that, thanks to the graphics, my satisfaction is guaranteed while I smash their small bodies with some five-ton hammer. Assuming that I can hit those small bastards.

They could bring back Diablo 1's succubi demon class though.

Made the best sounds upon dying. And hey, would fulfill harb's request for in-game nudity. Like mini Andariels. Minus a few extra legs.

Mephisto. And cows. They ruined much of D2...

What I'd like to see return are D1-style succubi. The ones that ran away when approached. The D2 ones are just so weak and easy to kill in comparison.

Teleporting critters always annoyed me, especially when they'd magically regain a portion of their health.

I'm also not a big fan of million HP bosses who do big damage simply because fighting them just isn't that much fun. There has to be a way of making a challenging boss monster without simply jacking up its hit-points while still making it fun to fight. This is one area where I think Guild Wars actually did pretty good because bosses weren't suspiciously immune to your most powerful spells but you still had to fight smart to beat them.

D2 Succubi: Blood Curse is fucking annoying to mages.

Abyss/Oblivion Knights: Iron Maiden is too deadly to Melee characters.

Burning Souls: North covered it.

Undead Stygian Dolls: Anything that deals more damage posthumously than it dealt alive is fucked up.

Leapers: Already been covered quite a bit.

Vultures: Really hate having to WAIT to kill something. Was quite annoying.

many of the monsters that you guys are listing are what made D2 memorable, and a challenge.

Challenge= bad? no.

give me hard monsters please. Things like lightning enchanted, blow up dolls, etc... were a good thing in my eyes. It kept me on my toes... made playing in those areas more intense.

btw... i believe in one of the latest videos I saw a lightning enchanted boss :D

D2 was such a huge drop in the quality of monster style from D1, so depressing.

These are the things from D2 I could stand:

Act 1 - Fallen (borderline, shaman passed that line), zombies, skeletons, goatmen, corrupted rogues
Act 2 - Kitty men, ghouls, the annoying giant mommies that rezed undead were okay, viper men, hunched razorback hungle guys
Act 3 - Annoying guys with scythes, the lightning ghosts at least LOOK good
Act 4 - Pit lords.... death knights were so-so, they were a hell of a step down from D1's Steel Lords, you know?
Act 5 - Minotaurs, succubi

Vampires were disappointing for some reason I am unable to verbalize, but not having any feet wasn't good.

I like how the demons in HG have an alien-esque style to them, really fits in with the futuristic theme. A clean slate, without any baggage.

I wonder why people want the strongest of monsters out of the game, I have lots of fun trying to beat conviction gloams or fanaticism dolls untwinked in hardcore ;). Killing boring harmless zombies is only fun for so long.

However, things like Iron Maiden should be removed as they are clearly overpowered. No melee character can clear the chaos sanctuary alone because of that.

Yeah, they were pretty cool. Best "new normal monster" design for D2, by far. The rez mechanic was annoying in the sense of all your fine work getting undone by a wave of a monster's hand, but it was a hundred times better than the Fallen Shaman, since undead rising from the dead is actually a cool theme.

I agree with getting rid of the Lightning enchanted-multishots, also some of the fire enchanteds that you meet in hell that deal around 6000 damage with 75% fire resist.

Theres nothing like playing a character for weeks on end only to have them explode in one shot.

Also get rid of Iron maiden unless you plan on making it work against casters too. Its entirely unfair that melee can 1 shot themselves while ranged characters are immune.

Some of those were annoying also because of their location.

The vipers in the Claw Viper Temple Level 2, too many of them for that specific area. If they came at you at the entrance you had to be really ready for them. Once you ran back to level 1, it was impossible to go back down.

And the Scarab Beetles were annoying in the Maggot Lair, because you could only move forward or back, of course back never worked because some other player didn't want to move. And the Scarabs didn't mind being all lined up.

I agree... And with the Balrog wtf too.

Seriously, with those gone, they'd need to add some new kinds of monsters as hard as those, or we're left with a very boring, bland mix of monsters lacking a personality. Please don't take away challenging monsters in HGL, and then I'm not talking challenging-as-in-lots-of-life. Now those can be annoying.

Some of the most memorable monsters in Diablo 1 was for example Hell Quick Shot Lava Maws to me. :D Oh and Advocates of course. :) In Diablo 2, I disliked for example Vultures and the likes, but didn't mind at all the Minotaurs, or Oblivion Knights although Iron Maiden should have been adjusted. Not their other curses or behavior though, IMHO. I also liked the nasty end monsters protecting Baal.
And the Scarab Beetles were annoying in the Maggot Lair, because you could only move forward or back, of course back never worked because some other player didn't want to move.
I disliked that area much more than its monsters though. I think it was completely unnecessary in a multiplayer game. :p Sure, make narrow pathways if you wish, but not as narrow as they start exploiting the stupidity of some cooperative pick up groups.

Yes, and yay for Fire Enchanted Stygian Dolls. ;)

But there's a fine line to walk here... For example, I don't think a melee character should just be able to rush in and have an easy time in higher difficulties. But I could perhaps take a Stygian Doll's power as melee more than that exploding thing. It felt a bit cheap, although it definitely paved way for some tactical elements. For example, Paladin slow auras, stunning, ranged spells/attacks, and being a little more cautious. A problem with their design might however be that they can have very varying difficulty depending on the character you'd play in solo mode. In multiplayer I felt they were hardly that much of a nuisance though even in Hell if you played in a decent team. Then it most mostly about special freaky cases of boss mods on evil monster types, and things like the Cold Enchanted + Fire Enchanted explosion thing, and MSLE's.
