View Full Version : Vae Victis - Discussion

Ok since this is the official guild name for the Hellgate Guru community, I think it would be nice to discuss how we would like the guild to be structred or just basic talk over how much we are going to own.
Also I'd like to take this oppurtunity to explain what Vae Victis means. First, a small history lesson;
Wikipedia:
Vae victis is Latin for "Woe to the conquered". (or Woe to the Vanquished)
In 390 BC, an army of Gauls led by Brennus attacked Rome, capturing all of the city except for the Capitoline Hill, which was successfully held against them. Brennus besieged the hill and finally the Romans came out wishing to ransom their city. Brennus demanded 1000 pounds (327 kg) of gold and the Romans agreed to his terms.
The Gauls provided steelyard and weights, and the Romans brought out their gold. But the Romans noticed that the weights were counterfeited and dared to notify Brennus about the issue. Brennus took his sword, threw it over the weights and exclaimed: "Vae victis!", forcing the Romans to bring even more gold to fulfill their obligation.[citation needed]
In more recent history, Brennus' phrase was borrowed for the Legacy of Kain series of videogames, where it became the battlecry of the eponymous vampire anti-hero.
Now to the meaning. It does not mean you woe for the vanquished, rather than you are giving the vanquished their woe. Woe can mean distress, grief or regret. So basically you are giving the vanquished that, and from my view that's exactly what we want to give those demon filth. Distress over that they are getting their asses kicked, grief because they know nothing compared to our power and finally regret for invading earth and getting their asses kicked.
Looking to kicking demon ass with you guys soon!

We are a rather large forum, and as a guild for the entire forum we cannot exclude anyone from the forum.
So first: How large can a guild be?
Second: If we cant fit everyone who wants to be in what do we do?
Third: Will there be any sort of rank within the guild?
I can only supply an answer for number two. Multiple Guru Guilds
pdvinenz

People are supposed to sign up for the guild, so those who already have a guild or are not interested don't need to join.
I don't see a problem with having a large guild of 100 people or more. As for recruiting, I think the best way to start is to take forum regulars at first, then continue from there if needed.
Maybe we can different chapters of a guild, maybe one for each part of the world, like Europe, Asia, Americas and Oceania?
I guess there will be ranks, as with all guilds. There are most likely going to be officers of the guild and regualr members. Maybe this could be sorted a bit later once we get or make more details.

I would say dont wory about the number till FSS tells us how big the guilds can be. Granted Im more of a fan of pure democracy so just a guild leader and make it an informal group of instance partners but if every one else dissagress then im also fine with the more traditional system.

Yeah, that logo would be cool for a metal band or something, but I think for the guild we (and by we I mean I) would prefer something a little more...gothic? At the moment it just looks a bit too fluid and modern, which is cool, but not quite what I envision in HGL.
That said, I really dig the trails running off the text and oval!
EDIT: Wow, need to look before I post - this was re: the first logo suggestion by Onyx. re: this one, I agree the antlers are kind of odd-looking, even if crested helms are sweet. Still sweet, and I definitely can't anything approaching that good. Are we shooting for our big logo, like for a Vae Victus site, or one that we'd theoretically put on something like a tabard (but, um, not a tabard, given people's reaction to those in the Cloth thread :))

so.. who is the leader?
For the time being, I am. My aim was to just get the guild running then hand over the leadership to somebody else, but if nobody wants to, or feels they can do it, I will continue.
I would like to answer some of the questions so for. With regards to the guild size, I just don't know enough about the mechanics of the game to make a decision on that right now. If there is a limit on players in the guild, we could always create a second or third guild to form an alliance. Rankings are also something I will be looking into, but, as before, the game is so far away and it will be hard to know who will stay committed.

Chapters sound great, for ranks we could borrow from the actual Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon (full name) hierarchy, with the leader of the whole "unofficial" alliance of chapters being the Grand Master and the Chapter leaders being, I don't know about that, high masters ? :D
What do you say, GRAND MASTER Killmojo ?
You could have novices, armsmasters, sergeants, lieutenants, evocati ("Rome" from HBO),grail bearers, paladins etc, maybe a whole equivalent hierarchy for cabalists and the third class, but with other names.
Be creative !
Non-guilders could be tolerates, people who haven't joined because they have other guilds but have proven to be friends or allies could be friends of the Order.
Generally, you should the semblance of a rigorous organization.
The Hellgate logo isn't too good for this, OnyxAbyss' logo is too simple, the other one had that weird drawing, but the crossed swords were great. I can't draw, but I'll try to think up some cool ideas.

I was messing around with Onyxs modified version of Brandnewyorks logo in paint. I came up with a more templar helm looking version. I did it in paint so it kind of looks like crap and its bad quality but its just a concept. If people like this idea I guess someone who has more expirence with making these things can take the original version and try to do the same thing I did.

I love the name.. and count me in.. Odds are I'll only have one or two friends joining me in HG:L if that so it is silly to have a guild of 2 ROFL!!... plus you guys are all uber cool. It would be great to hang out with you all in game
as for some of the issues pepper had at first, I ran a few guilds / clans in various games so to answer your questions
1: probably 100.. but there are ways around this :P (see answer 2)
2: just as you said Pepper.. multiple guru guilds.. just create the same name with a nice added latin prase at the end..
3: always there should be rank. It doesn't have to be an "official" rank , like say Sol is leader.. we don't become his official beawtches.. but in a way he is our leader and we have to respect his wishes :) think of a democratic style leadership. I personally think Leadership (leader + officers) always should be made up of the dedicated members who are open minded, and don't get hissy pissy if a member questions them.
3a: also , do not overload on officers or it gets to power heavy. If anything have say 1 leader.. 1 co-leader and say 2-3 officers for a guild of 100.. that is like 18-20 members per leader/officer. Break the 100 guild member team into 5 sections then . Did this with my CS clan and it worked wonders. The same group always played together and say half of team Beta couldn't make the scrim.. Team Gamma just jumped right in and there was no worry about communication.
Same could be done with this. Especially with 40+ guild raids... it would be an almost instant split build :p can perform flanks and leet roman maneuvers. Not to mention an individual leader per group so you don't have one person controlling an entire team of 40.. Of course if the guild leader says fall the F back!!? the officers better listen or its a courtmarshal :P
PS: i like the original vae victis logo.. but I say give it time. The fiery style works good but perhaps a black and fiery background swirled together with Vae Victis coming out 3dimensionally. Perhaps a semi transparent image of a demon or all 3 classes(once finished) forming a triangle around the name :)

I like that idea, but i'd make a couple more officers. Set it up for about 12-15 members per officer. Also, ya need to make sure there is a way to elimante unfair officers.
Last but not least, a hope. Please do not force anyone to do anything in the guild. Do not say "make this build." Rather, suggest it.

-i came up with the name brethren in tides of blood(it sounds cool and the initials sound cool also) and was going to make my own guild, but then saw this guild- so as sgtpepper kinda said, we should have multiple guilds, im thinking vae victus as the name of the whole group and 3 guilds, including my guild name if you want

it would be cool like being a member of the vae victus guild, in the BIROB clan

as to organization, officers are definitely a must, but I'd wait until the game comes out so we know who's actually going to be on regularly and capable of holding the guild together. I like the idea of being part of a smaller squad, then we could have squad pride and intra-guild competitions.
ranks are fun, but being the guy labelled "peon" isn't. i say there should be three levels of command, maybe four. Leader, officers, and members. The possible fourth would be inactives, to label those that defect to a different game.

brethren in rags of blood is pretty general, metaphorically meaning clan members fought and risked their lives for their...clan....yeeeah
and in the history of vae victus on page1
-quoted
In 390 BC, an army of Gauls led by Brennus attacked Rome, capturing all of the city except for the Capitoline Hill,
It fits the scenario, with a battle…hmmm….i know- howabout 3 perspectives of the history of vae victus- brethren in rags of blood is the battle side to the story, maybe another clan name will be something about the money involved, another about anger- we can figure it out

So the idea of squads is a very good one. If we can organize that right, it will be a very interesting thing for all - marching separately - striking together ;)

i just thought there was a bit too many... i mean its not like everyone in the guild is gonna have a different rank...
A question: What are going to be our views on item sharing? Will there be a sharing within the clan? For instance: I am a gunner. I found the equivalent of The Grandfather (Executioner Sword). Am going to have to give it to whoever in the guild needs it, or can i hang on to it?
Eternalchaos
Saturday, June 3, 2006, 12:31 PM
Honestly... I think it depends. You could always offer to sell it to someone in the clan at a reduced price.
Even my friends we sell one another things. I tend to just give them items though unless they want to pay me back especially If i won't use them. Still.. if you are a gunner and you find a Grandfather ROFL if storage overlaps characters I'd be keeping it for my templar character I will make just for that sword..
but.. I'd say just offer it at reduced price. Say it sells for 10million.. sell it maybe for 4-6million within the clan. Or item trade.. Say someone found your ultimate gunner weapon... :) sounds fair.. Ultimate Gun for Ultimate Sword

Saturday, June 3, 2006, 02:57 PM

Then we are already three persons with the same opinion!
Demanding to hand something over is not a good thing... giving something to the guild for a lesser-than-normal price is fine by me. I'd ask first my guild/clan if someone could use it - if not i'll sell/trade it with someone else.
jdizzle
Saturday, June 3, 2006, 03:43 PM
i think we wont have to worry about that as long as we dont really define rules involving trade and sharing in the guild, i think trading willingly, for cheap will come instinctively, were all going to be friends anyways..well maybe a rule like
-no commanding others to give up their items- would eliminate the demanding of giving up stuff, but being a happy, trustwortthy clan of friends would allow easy and cheaper tradeing
Eternalchaos
Saturday, June 3, 2006, 03:54 PM
Yeah i hate demanding.. I see something I want I always goof aroudn going OMG I WANT IT GIMMIE GIMMIE and just run circles around the guy for an hour :P but its al in good fun because I'm with friends. Unless they litterally want to give it to me for free.. I really rather farm it myself, trade for it, or at least give them some kind of money.
I usually work with my friends using a "IOU" system. They hook me up with 20mil worth of armor in RYL2 I tend to be a master at finding books. I've given everyone free 300,000-1,000,000 gold books. You give me the sword.. IOU say, next grade armor once you find some.. or that suit of armor you got on now.. I want it once you find better.. etc etc.

Cool song :) I heard it before a few times, just didn't know who did it until now.
Here are a few songs, epic like..and/or evilish sounding.. or more gothic sounding that might go with HG:L's existing theme of music being used in the game
Epica - The Valley, Epica - Palladium
Therion - Postludium Axel Rudi Pell - The Arrival
Within Temptation - The Gatekeeper (i love this song.. it gets better as it goes on)
Kitaro - The Heavenly Father (odd but might work )
Castlevania Symphony OST - Disk 1 , track 2
Kamelot - Ascension
Dragonland - Dragon Dawn (iffy on this one)
:P yeah I got way to much music. I only picked stuff with no lyrics because theme songs with lyrics that don't go with the guild's name or moto make people go 0.o
BTW i also got some amazing metal techno stuff... it was titled under the band FLESH FIELD but I have never found any reference to this band anywhere yet on the web or internet. This stuff is amazing and I wish I could share it. It would go very nicely. Especially Lost and Silicon Skies

OMFG.. *dies*... I love it.. the fact it is so like GW.. even if you go online you dont' have to worry about noobs KS'ing and item stealing or boss whoring..
the game play looks amazing.. not overly fast.. but not sluggish and I do like how instancing works. It isn't so much instancing though. To me it looks more like they have a quest set up on 1 of say.. 40 versions of the map. that means you got a 1/40 chance of getting this quest. I am sure it isn't impossible to find but it will require some farming which sounds fun to me! rofl
imagine finding that instance quest / map build when you are in your 80's ROFL!!!! oh no.. a nightmare *looks at it dealing 800000 damage and wins!* wooho!
PS: I do think the level cap should be higher than 99/100. Playing RYL2 lets me see that. It has a similar leveling system to HG:L it seems.. you level up very fast at first then it slows down .. but hell.. 2 weeks of solid playing and you could be level 80 already. I originally wanted a 255 level cap but that is retarded now that I think of it.. Perhaps.. around 120.. I mean it gets really hard to level past 60 in RYL2 but it isn't impossible, same with FFXI.. Diablo2 was the same... it was just enemies gave you crappy XP at some point Assuming HG:L has enmies that do grow with you or very powerful enemies.. 120 seems pretty fair.. it would require a retarded amount of grinding and in a way.. plus.. that is an extra 20 lvels of grinding and 20more reasons why to play!!! :P

Plus.. what if you got 56K and the area takes a bit to load like in GW .. enemies by the portal will instantly agro and kill you before you even get there ROFL!

Ok, and back to the point of the thread. Another question:
Do we plan to "power level" the new people in our guild, or much like in a fraternity, make them level their own first hero to "build character"?
Blackfish
Sunday, June 4, 2006, 01:02 PM
I've never seen the point of power-levelling...so much of this kind of game is about the character-building process - getting new levels and skills and gear - and the enjoyment of that (for me, anyway), is crippled if someone helps you zoom through it.

I finally understand what power-levelling means :D I wouldn't do it either, I like the fact that my character's levels or lack of reflects my own n00biness and idiocy.
I would, however, accept to be helped a bit with a character which I will keep in reserve so as to open a big stinkly can of whoop ass on any asshole who makes fun of my n00by character or repeatedly targets me while I'm really far below him in terms of skills. AKA, he'll be dead meat, and I'll emo a fart in his helmet.

I hate power leveling.. I only power level when i've played through the game.. and I am making a new character just to help out with like.. level 80 questing.. I am not gonig to spend 2 months getting to level 80
Just get your buddy.. power level you through the game and do your stuff.. Unless of course it is a new class :) like going from templar to cabalist. Play through it slow and steady to learn the class first

I think FSS might make powerleveling harder than Diablo II. You know like not giving experience to kills made by players 10 levels above another player and not giving experience to monster kills made players 10 levels lower or higher than the monster.
If it is possible, then yes the guild should support its members. That's what a guild is about.
Blackfish
Sunday, June 4, 2006, 11:19 PM
Oh, certainly if they want to. But it shouldn't be a "you have to be X level to be in the guild, here we're going to power level you now" kind of thing. Which it doesn't sound like it will be, which is good!
I do hope they limit things, like in WoW...it's fairly difficult to power level because of how aggro (who the enemies attack) worked and crushing blows and the like - if you were level 30 in a level 40 or 50 zone, you were pretty much toast unless you had an army of friendlies with you, and this made it a lot more time-efficient and less frustrating to just play the game like it was meant to be played.
That said, some people might want to avoid that, esp. on a second or eighth char or something.
jdizzle
Sunday, June 4, 2006, 11:37 PM
ya lvl req for giulds is dumb, fss will definately make it harder to power lvl youngins
its really easy to say that if lvl difference of 40, than 20% exp gaind, 30 lvl diff than 25% gaind....plus fss allreadi announced that higherlvl chars in a lower lvl place wont drop items, money, exp or anything to avoid rigged cheesing
('to be cheezed' supposively was another name for 'to be rushed' a few years back in diablo2)
so with that in place there will be no point to have a lvl cap because low lvlers wont have any reason to follow around the big kids for anything except for a cool show......but iam a bit confused about no exp gained if higher lvl chars are around, wat if a gruop of highers are alredi fighting when a lower comes along??

Presumably you'd have to be in a group/party for the XP to be shared, and that way you don't have lowbies lurking around higher end people mooching off XP - the higher lvls at least have to invite the lowbie in, I'd expect.

Oh i have no problem with power leveling in the slightest... as long as the person who needs it has played the game through and experianced it. On my 9th char or so i'll certainly feel no need to 'play the storyline' if i need to test a build out at higher levels.
As for limits imposed, we would be naive to say there should be none, that said having harsh ones like level definers or playtime definers should not be involved at all.
However.... maybe there should be an elite section to the guild... for those wanting competitive gaming and the thrill of the race to be the best.
As Guru's 'official' guild we should aim to be a guild for anyone of guru's members and reflective of it. So that l337 gamers can join and be competitive and proud to state their guild, while casual gamers or those that don't want the l337 pressure can game in a fun enviroment.
If we don't define how we look at ourselves now it will be hard once we start in game.

Oh yeah definately a limit.. I would limit it based off level size. Party to far out of your level you get no XP and items... I am having trouble coming up with a fomula that might work... give me some time I probbably can think up something that boosts XP the bigger the party gets.. while making those that are trying to XP leach get nothing

The best fun i had in many MMORPG was to sit around and talk with people. I'm not interested in running around in a "look-what-my-level-is" kind.
Many called me a "noob" for that, but to be blunt, i don't care!
The best thing was in WoW - first someone insulted me, then he cried for my help. Make a guess how much help he got...

Happens in just a few moments. Just log in.. steal the admin rights.. ban everyone :P congrats it is your Ts2 until they close the client.. You can also plant scripts to delete all user info.. and crash the client... Sadly Ts2 refuses to patch this bug.

Yeah, don't ever buy a USB headset either, since we're already giving advice. I needed a headset with mic because my onboard soundcard was shot to hell. USB can't be trusted with audio signal and drivers. Mine goes to hell after minutes and I have to change any random setting to renew contact and get a signal. Which means alt tabbing for games. : / And when I unplug it the computer gets a bluescreen and resets. Stay far far away from usb headsets, but I think ordinary USB soundcards are ok.

look at Guild Wars.. observer mode was added late Nov early Dec... since then GvG turned into a copy cat "cookie-cutter" game..
You either run Pressure, Ranger Spike, Necro Spike, Rainbow spike, Iway, or Adrenaline spike..
it is sad.. because my guild used to run a basic balanced build and we constantly won.. but now you run that balanced build you get laughed at because it is so innefficient.. just like W/Mo's now such in GW for GvG and PvP yet my guild with W/Mo's gets 40+ game win streaks in the arenas hehe..
Thing is... HG:L who cares if they steal strats.. the game is about skill .. in guildwars you could be a moron and do fine.. because of how the game and skills are designed.. you can't screw up a skill nor your build.. why there is so many copy cats running around.

The reason why you see that in GW is because they stopped trying to balance the skills after they released the game. There should be tons of nerfing/buffing of skills going on in the patches to make the game as balanced as possible.

smiting is gone.. putrid explosion spam.. they weakened chain lightning...
at the same time they made mesmers cast even fasters.. monks have to worry less about mana.. warriors got screwed in most of their issues.. they left Iway ROFL!
spirit spamming was solved but they then brought it back with Ritualists 0.o They are still balancing just doing a shitty job at it.. It is why Guild Wars isn't selling anymore. I pretty much am finished with the game.. I just want HG:L already.. be it beta or demo.. i need my fix!!!

Not bad ghost.. I like that style you gave to the page also.. It isn't overly flashy but has as your Avatar/sig displays.. an erie ghost like aftertaste to it ..
btw two questions....
1) wtf is DKP i probably know what it is just it slipped my mind so x.x someone refresh me :)
2) ; - ; why isn't North, Sol and Krazy on that roster list *cries*
To answer your questions:
DKP stands for Dragon Kill Points. It a basically a system where you gather points for doing raids, which you can use to bid on items that drop. It rewards players who raid a lot, but allows more casual players to gather their gear over time.
Sol is actually in another guild/clan. He said that he would like to be an honourary member though. Krazy is in Umbra Aquila, and thus is not likely to join. North just has not epressed any interest so far, but I would welcome him if he did.

uhm... whats DKP? i made a cursory glance at the other posts to try to ascertain what it meant, but i cant seem to figure it out.
Killmojo

It's an acronym of Dragon Kill Points. For every run a member of a guild comes to, they get a certain amount of points. Points are given for killing bosses, arriving on time to a scheduled session, or performing guild-centred tasks. Once a member has enough points, they can bid on certain items that drop. In a quick example:
Player A turns up to a raid on time to a raid. The instance is cleared, and points are given out. Player a earns 1 dkp for arriving on time, 3 dkp for killing each of four instance bosses, and 5 dkp for killing the main raid boss. It is player A's first time in the instance, and now has a total of 18 dkp.
Player B, on the other hand, has been raiding for a month, waiting for a specific item to drop. He has amassed 60 dkp so far.
The item Player B is after drops, and Player A wants it. Player B has a large advantage in dkp and will outbid Player A. If they had rolled on the item, Player A had just as much a chance to receive the item as Player B, who has put a constant effort for the guild, and deserves it more.
So much for a simple example... DKP is used because it rewards those who raid often and help out the guild, while players who play and raid less will still accumulate dkp, and will get their items soon enough.
SgtPepper
Friday, June 16, 2006, 09:55 PM
To be perfectly honest i don't like the idea or the acronym... It just makes the guild a little too serious.
Firstly: I definently dislike being required to play at a certain time. Can't stand that stuff. I have to be in the right "mood" to play video games, and i'm not in the mood all the times. (please dont say "thats what she said")
Secondly: Player B helped the guild more, but he didn't neccesarily help on the raid as much. And more importantly if player A got it then its not really fair to make him give it away.
Thirdly: Items are completely random. Even the most elite of items are randomized. So how could player b even know that he wants the item. He knows he wants a certain type of item but not that item in particular.

I still havent thought of a nice "news" kind of page for the beginning of our site. If anyone has any creative idea or if you can write me brief description of the guild for me to use that would be great... and it'll be up sunday my uncle is coming over for fathers day.
Killmojo
Friday, June 16, 2006, 11:56 PM
SgtPepper: It is by no means a perfect system, but, in my experiences, it really is the most fair when it comes to large scale content. Such content may not even be in the game, and even if it is, we still have no idea how looting will be handled. There is a good chance there will be no need for any system at all.
Ghost: Currently I'm working on both a quick description and a set of rules (just some general conduct rules to make everyone feel welcome). They should be ready about the same time as the page is up.

question. How serious is this guild like will you be mad if i miss a big raid?
Blackfish
Sunday, June 18, 2006, 11:49 AM
Well firstly I doubt there will be "big raids" to speak of in HGL - from what they're saying they're moving pretty far away from the standard MMO tactic of having all the high-end content revolve around things you can only do with 39 other friends. So I wouldn't worry about that :D
Also, it doesn't look like we're going to be serious to that point anyway, even if it were an issue. So yay for that!
