View Full Version : Challenge Honour System

After a long recovery time from jet lag and the excesses of Christmas and New Year!! I am finally ready to get the ball rolling on our first challenge.

Before we start though, I need to make this thread so that it is absolutely clear to all the restrictions that we need in place to give a fun and interesting background to our arena.

Honour
As we all play SP, it's totally impossible to guard against cheats, therefore the entire system must be based on honour. With the only acclaim being the respect and undying admiration (:p) of your peers here on the SP forum, we need to be fair and square with each other about our reporting in the game. It's for fun, don't ruin it for yourself by being dishonest!

No cheatin'
Therefore, no 3rd party programs can be used whatsoever. No modifying your character or possessions through any process. Generally, use your brain if you are unsure if it would constitute cheating.... worst scenario, just ask and we can rule on it collectively. Basically, if in doubt, don't! ;)

**Additionally: No backing up your character through write protecting the files before Augmenting an item**

SP Client only
All characters will be started afresh anyway, so this shouldn't be an issue for anyone. Hopefully, we might even pull a few MPers over to the ranks! :) The reasoning behind this is that there are numerous differences between SP and MP, again, a level playing field.

Played as if Hardcore
All of my challenges, unless stated otherwise, are going to be "hardcore"... that means that the objective of the game is to live as long as possible under that Challenge's restrictions. Thus, when a character dies, the player has to report that death - it's the end of their challenge. They can, of course, continue to play that character as they wish, but their time in the competition is at an end. Honourable deaths are to be respected!!

No Bailing Out
Those of you unfamiliar with Hardcore might be tempted by this, so I need to spell it out. If you are going to die.... and you KNOW you are going to die and can't avoid it (i.e. blocked in)... you cannot press Escape and quit the game. This constitutes cheating. Suck it up and die with honour! :-D

Patch up
Where possible, all players need to try to get themselves patched up to the latest client. This levels the playing field for all. This could cause some difficulties, but we might be able to come up with solutions where possible.

Sign-Up threads
All competitions I set up will have a Sign Up thread with the individual rules of that competition, including a start and end date. I will also put up a table for the players to put their name, character name, level, class and other necessary information in, which they need to update as they go along. It sounds more complicated than it is, you'll see! ;) Keep all discussion about that challenge in that thread.

Screenies
Also be prepared to have a system in place for uploading screenshots. While most threads wont need a lot of screenies, some landmark shots of your character, nice finds, death throes... etc... could add a bit of colour to your story.

Other Challenges
While I don't intend to hold monopoly over these challenges and look forward to other people starting their own ones, let's initially keep just this one open for a few weeks until everyone's got their head around the idea. After that, we can have multiple challenges running simultaneously with people subscribing to the ones that interest them.

Awards
I will try to encourage the mods here to come up with some titles, even if they are temporary ones to award the victors. Even if it is something like "January's SP Champion", it gives a little more depth to it. We'll see if we can persuade them. **UPDATE** It seems like this will be fine! Custom Titles in recognition of your heroics! ;)

So.... that's all I have got for now. Please discuss it below, bring up and ideas, changes or dislikes now so that we can deal with them before we start our first challenge. I will post the Sign Up thread for it this Sunday (20th).

Hopefully, this will both encourage those of use who are disappointed with our lot as SPers to get some more value from this game.... and may also help to pull a few disillusioned MPers over to the Light!

Btw, once you get all your ideas sorted and all that as well as all the rules and so on...

Ask Sol if he can make a separate subforum in the SP section that's dedicated to the competitive SP gaming (like honour based stuff, comptetitions and so on) so it doesnt get lost or cluttered up with the other SP stuff, and so it's easier for the competing players to find the relevant threads and so on :)

Thanks again Sp3tSnAz - that's a good idea!

Let's see how popular it is first.... we might not have many players yet.... I don't know how it will work out! ;)

Sounds neat! :) I've been memory-fiddling with my MM for a while now, and I'm starting to get somewhat anxious to start something new UNFIDDLED. ;) HC worries me, though, since I guess my playstayle at times tend to be a wee bit suicidal, hehe.

Any comments on the rules... anything to add Grifthin?

Lillis: Great, don't worry about the HC mode, it's just something to give the competition a win/loss type situation! Just make sure you die valiantly and write up a ballad of your heroic deeds!! hehe

Rules are Perfect as they are - I'm sure as we encounter situations we can always ammend them.

Sounds great. I'm getting bored waiting for Elite mode to be fixed so I can start my long-term character, so I'll certainly join in with this to have some fun in the mean time.

Im in as well. I want to try a new Marksman anyways. Maybe a build centering around multishot and NOT the sniper tree. Useless in nightmare IMO. No 'Nades either.

Ok, we've got 5 so far! :) That's good enough to roll with! ;)

Check back on Sunday for the Sign Up thread for it.

Hi. It's my first time posting in the forum (after months of just reading it) because I never really found anything that I could add to any conversation and all my questions were answered. But this idea really caught my attention and I just wanted to say "Hi" and "I'm in.

Hi.

I'm in.

I forgot to comment on this....

You might want to wait and see what the restrictions are before planning out any builds..... I promise you it's not going to be an easy challenge!

Given the rate I die in softcore play, I probably won't last a week.

But, what the hey, let's live dangerously.

I'm in.

I'll get with Sol about that when he comes online. Need to move some things around and clean a few things up and look at adding some various sub sections and what not. Hellgate Guru is going nowhere but up!

Keep at it, you got an interesting concept going on. At this point I wouldn't mind seeing straight HC mode drop to SP mode too. I just don't think that many subs out there play MP HC mode seriously enough to gripe about something like that.

Cheers Asuka and Huskie!

Jump on in Huskie.... there's nothing to lose and it will help extend the shelf-life of the game for you. I still take part in Diablo 2 challenges 7 years after its release! Who knows, you might find it adds some depth to the game for you! :)

Mikeandroe, welcome! :)

It's worth it for people to at least give it a shot. They got nothing to lose and it might be so fun that it may catch on.

Ok, I'm not a necromancer - really!
But somehow I missed these competition threads when I was trawling through (did someone say a separate sub-forum for comps?).

I'd just like to say I'm in for any future comps (I see "lowlife" just ended) and bummed I missed the last!

Sounds very cool, though I'm a little concerned (intimidated perhaps?) no one has posted any honorable deaths to date. My experience is that you're lucky to get to L15 without at least one.

Count me in too (if very late)... :)

I think this thread was just announcing that there would be some challenges. The first one was the Lowlife challenge and that's where you'll find quite a few deaths announced! ;)

Can't wait for the next challenge to start
